Favorite volunteer experience?

My favorite volunteer experience was probably volunteering at the Salvation Army last semester. It was so cool to get to see the same people every Friday and make relationships with them! Any kind of long term volunteer thing is the best, because you really get to get to know the people you are serving.

What agencies and/or organizations did you primarily volunteer with?

I volunteer with the Salvation Army, note-taking for the CEA, Young Life Capernaum, rEcess, and participated in a park cleanup during Make A Difference Day. This semester I am going to be volunteering every week with the Literacy program helping kids with reading at a local elementary school.

How many hours have you earned?

117 Hours

Why do you enjoy doing this type of work?

I enjoy volunteering because I am passionate about helping others. I think if you are able, everyone should help the less fortunate. At the same time, I am a big supporter of creating relationships. Just because someone may be less fortunate does not mean you cannot learn from them, and I can honestly say that I have learned some of the greatest lessons from people who I've served through volunteerism, whether that be someone staying at the Salvation Army or a child with special needs.

Favorite thing about going to the University of Arkansas?

My favorite thing about going to the University of Arkansas is the fact that it is so big! There are so many opportunities to get to know a variety of different people. I have met some of the greatest people already through things like Greek Life and the VAC. Those relationships would not have been possible if it hadn't been for the U of A.

Nearly every week, I get to lead the youth choir from my church in singing for and visiting with patients at the Willard Walker Hospice Home. It is one of my favorite things to do and has become one of the highlights of my week.

How many hours have you earned?

I have earned 225+ hours since coming to the U of A.

Why do you enjoy doing this type of work?

I really enjoy getting to meet new people. There are many lessons and perspective changes to be had just by spreading God's love in others' lives by simply showing people that you care. No matter who it is, whether it's a person from another country or a patient on their deathbed, there is always something to learn. A lot of times, it takes me out of my comfort zone, but it's satisfying and completely worth it. I'm thankful for the patience and opportunities that different organization leaders have given me to, I hope, have an impact with people they have allowed me to meet and interact with.

Favorite thing about going to the University of Arkansas?

Honestly, I really appreciate all the ways that a person can get involved here at the U of A and in Fayetteville. There are so many opportunities to get engaged and gather life skills from experience in volunteer work. Coming here for school was one of the best decisions I think I have ever made.

Favorite volunteer experience?

My favorite volunteer experience has been my assignment this year. As a distribution leader for the Razorback Food Recovery program, you get assigned to work with one of our partners for the entire semester. Apart from Razorback Food Recovery, I also volunteer with Big Brothers Big Sisters of NWA, 99 Balloons, Arkansas Missions of Mercy, and First United Methodist Church- Bentonville.

How many hours have you earned?

Why do you enjoy doing this type of work?

I enjoy work that has lots of personal interaction. I'm a face-to-face person,  I love meeting people in our community that have different backgrounds, stories, and interests. The programs that I've been a part of have all allowed me to get to know so many different kinds of people, and I've had an absolute blast with all of them!

Favorite thing about going to the University of Arkansas?

Looking back now that I'm a senior, I can say my favorite thing about going to the University of Arkansas has been the friendships that I've made. My college experience wouldn't have been the same without the people that I spent hours studying with in Mullins, Saturdays with in the student section, and everywhere in between.
